Virginia Beach Coaching Staff: 2019/2020 Season

Tommy Lewis:

Tommy carries over 16 years of coaching experience at various age groups into the Roughrider family. Born and raised in upstate New York, Tommy was a successful three sport athlete at Canandaigua Academy before ultimately choosing to pursue lacrosse at the collegiate level and headed south to Division III Virginia Wesleyan University in 1994. Lewis was a two-time Co-Captain at VWU and went on to become the school’s all-time leading points scorer, all-time leader in assists, all-time leader in groundballs and 5th all-time in goals. Tommy was also named to the All-Conference Team three years in a row, while leading the conference in assists in ‘97 as well as leading the conference in goals and assists in ’98. He finished out his collegiate athletic career by being named USILA All-American and participated in the North vs. South Senior All-Star game. Lewis was also the recipient of the Norfolk Sports Club’s Outstanding Athlete Award and the Marlin Athletic Club’s Donald M. Forsyth Student Athlete of the Year Award, which signified his dedication in both the classroom and on the field. In 2011, Tommy was the first lacrosse player in Virginia Wesleyan’s history to be inducted into the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

He resides in Virginia Beach with his wife, Andrea, and their 4 children Emma, Thomas, Christian and Alexander.

John Hattery:

John Hattery leads the Virginia Beach 2026 Roughriders focusing on development of individual skill and team concepts. John’s played in HS (Perkiomen School) and College (Western Maryland College now known as McDaniel College) primarily in the goal.

Prior to settling in Virginia Beach he coached in Maryland with Reisterstown’s Rec program and Century High School’s Winter Indoor Team. He particularly enjoys teaching young players the game. John has been a part of the VB Lacrosse Community for almost 3 years, coaching with Southside Lacrosse, V3 and now Roughriders.

Bill Kelly

Bill Kelly serves as an assistant coach for the 2026 Virginia Beach Roughriders.

Coach Kelly has coached youth lacrosse for multiple organizations, including, Southside Lacrosse, V3 and most recently the 2026 Virginia Beach Roughriders. He has coached at several levels of youth lacrosse from the developmental stages through Middle School. Prior to entering the Virginia Beach lacrosse community, he coached youth sports locally for several years with Pop Warner football, Little League Baseball and various youth basketball programs.

Coach Kelly is focused on developing young athletes both on and off the field. He believes that lacrosse is the perfect avenue for young players to learn how to set goals and achieve those goals, develop lifelong friendships and understand the importance of mutual respect.

Bill is a lifelong resident of Virginia Beach where he enjoys the beach life with his wife Mary and three children, Emily, Jack and Mary Kate.
